Writing for the Forbes Technology Council, N2N founder and CEO Kiran Kodithala describes his own shift from a traditional, P&L-focused CEO to a hands-on builder — the change he argues now separates software leaders who ship from those who don't.
He recounts the moment that forced it: a late-February deadline to show customers working prototypes of an AI chatbot, a data-analysis engine, and a document-ingestion engine, live on a 100-foot screen — with the products not yet ready. For the first time in fifteen years he connected to his own GitHub, set up an AI coding license, and started building alongside his team.
The through-line of the piece is that velocity without discipline is a liability. His four principles:
- Develop a discipline around building and experimentation — the CEO can now prototype directly, but must own the process, not just the roadmap.
- Build guardrails based on your customers — at AI speed there's no traditional code or design review, so security, accessibility, and compliance (for N2N, FERPA and HIPAA) have to be engineered in as guardrails.
- Don't lose sight of your objectives — "you can build anything," but time, money, and addressable market are still finite; build only what has true customer value.
- Do more human tasks — as software work is commoditized, the durable CEO skills are mentoring, communicating, and advocating for the customer.
